Halfway between Mahé and Aldabra, lies a chain of 25 coral islands, the closest group to the
main granite Inner Islands, 235km from Mahé. The Amirantes includes true atoll formations at
St. Josephs, Desroches and Poivre.

Desroches: Surrounded by coral reef, Desroches is the largest of the Amirantes
archipelago; 193km southwest of Mahé, an hour by air on several scheduled flights per week.
Desroches is part of huge lagoon. Most of the rim of the lagoon is fully submerged which
provides excellent diving conditions. The island has been well developed with timber and
coconut plantations. There is a small village of about 50 people while the lodge has 20 chalets
and offers exciting watersports and diving.
The diving here is rich and varies between walls, tunnels and caves. The multitudes of fish of
many different species accounts for the fame of the Desroches Drop.
St Joseph: The atoll of St. Joseph's offers some superb exploration opportunities
around it's peripheral islands while the shallow lagoon and tidal flats are a bird and fish
watchers delight.
Desnoeufs: The uninhabited Desnoeufs has a very large sooty tern colony. It was
formerly the source of vast quantities of eggs, but is now enjoying a degree of protection as a
breeding reserve.
Poivre: Poivre a long lagoon, rich in bird life and lush vegetation, cuts into the atoll.
Migrating giant mantas visit Poivre.
